God Becomes Man
Selected Bible Verse:
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory,
the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and
truth.
~John 1:14
When Adam and Eve first
sinned in garden, God told the serpent that the Son of the woman would
crush his head. This was His first promise to us that He would send
us a man to destroy the works of the evil one. Throughout the Old
Testament, God promised over and over that this Messiah would come
into the world and reunite us with Him. This Man was God Himself,
who left His throne in Heaven to redeem us from our sins. This is
the Christmas Story - the birth of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, the Son
of God.
God sent His angel, Gabriel,
to the small village of Nazareth to a young woman named Mary who was
engaged to the man, Joseph, who was of the house of David.
"Mary, you are blessed
among women," Gabriel told her. "For you have found favor
with God. Behold, you will be with child and shall bring forth a Son,
and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and of His kingdom
there will be no end."
So, Mary questioned the angel
and said, "How can this be since I am a virgin?"
And the angel answered her
and said, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power
of the Highest will overshadow you. Therefore, the Holy One who is
to be born will be called the Son of God. For with God nothing is
impossible."
So Mary said, "I am
the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be according to your word."
And the angel left her.
